We left the harbour at dusk and our whole trip on the train was in the dark. Every so often we passed through railway stations where we saw some lights.
But it was also "Empire Night" and there were bonfires all along the track.
We climbed down after midnight to cross the paddocks and into the dining hall to be allocated our huts.
Great to see here what the train really looked like.
(I was 12. It was May 1956).
